The White House High football team dropped its second game in as many weeks to a neighboring rival, suffering a 17-6 loss at Greenbrier on Friday night.

“This is a big win for us,” Bobcat head coach Kirk Williams said. “Both sides played real hard tonight and should be proud of their efforts.”

Just as they did one week earlier against Portland, the Blue Devils were able to jump out to an early lead thanks to a first-quarter turnover forced by the special-teams unit.

After recovering a Greenbrier muffed punt on the Bobcat 30 yard line, the Blue Devils took a 6-0 lead on a Ronald Honeycutt 2-yard run.

After a slow start, the Bobcats were able to control the line of scrimmage in the second quarter with their running attack. They were able to orchestrate back-to-back drives to take a 14-6 lead at halftime. Senior tailback Jacob Waffird got the Bobcats on the board with a 6-yard touchdown run, and senior quarterback Cameron Grogan would cap the next Greenbrier drive off with his 4-yard run.

White House (2-2) came out of the locker room looking poised to close the gap, but after a 10-play drive stalled at the Bobcats’ 7-yard line, a low snap on the field-goal attempt left the scoreboard unchanged.

Greenbrier (2-2) was able to answer with its own 10-play drive on the Bobcats’ first possession of the fourth quarter. Christian’s Warren 29-yard field goal sailed through the uprights with 3:51 left in the game.

It appeared as if the Blue Devils only needed two plays to cut into the deficit as senior quarterback Luke Hopkins found senior tight end Logan Trimmer for a 33-yard touchdown just two plays into their drive, but a holding penalty nullified the touchdown. A Bobcat sack and forced fumble on the next play sealed the game for Greenbrier.

“I’m just proud of our kids for fighting the entire 48 minutes,” White House head coach Jeff Porter said. “We were banged up coming into this game, and it only got worse during the game. But I’m proud of the effort.”
