Top prep football games for Week 6

Here’s a look at the top high school football matchups for Week 6, along with predictions from Michael Murphy:

Last week’s record: 6-4 (.600)

Season record: 38-12 (.760)

Ensworth quarterback Coleman Goodwin.

GAME OF THE WEEK

CPA (4-0) AT ENSWORTH (2-3)

When: Friday, 7 p.m.

Christ Presbyterian Academy, the top-ranked team in Class 3A, has taken care of business, capturing wins over Peachtree Ridge (Ga.), Knoxville Catholic, White House Heritage and Pearl-Cohn. The Lions, who are averaging 35.5 points, haven’t been beaten since the 2013 Class 3A championship, but in order for CPA to stretch its win streak to 20 games, coach Ingle Martin will have to defeat his former coach and mentor, Ricky Bowers. Martin quarterbacked Montgomery Bell Academy to three state championships under Bowers (1998-2000), and he even served as an assistant at Ensworth in 2010. The Tigers, coming off a 52-35 win over Pope John Paul II, are off to an uncharacteristically poor start, but they’ve also endured an absolutely brutal early slate. Murphy’s pick: Ensworth 27, CPA 21

Blackman coach David Watson

BLACKMAN (3-2, 1-1 2-6A) AT COOKEVILLE (5-0, 2-0)

When: Friday, 7 p.m.

Blackman’s offense had been on a recent tear, but that string of stat-stuffing performances came to an end with last Friday’s 21-7 setback at rival Oakland. The Blaze, ranked eighth in Class 6A, were held to less than 200 yards, managed just eight first downs and committed four turnovers against the Patriots. This week they’ll travel to Cookeville for a Region 2-6A showdown. Cookeville senior running back Vic Johnson, who had 355 yards and four touchdowns last week at Siegel, has 1,117 yards and 14 touchdowns on the season. Blackman 42, Cookeville 31

Overton captains Tamin Aldarawcheh (57), Jason Gardner (1), Angel Lopez (56) and Julius King (2).

MCGAVOCK (3-2, 2-0 3-6A) AT OVERTON (4-1, 2-0)

When: Friday, 7 p.m.

These Metro Nashville public schools are coming off momentous Week 5 wins, and both will be putting their unbeaten Region 3-6A records on the line. McGavock, led by senior running back Kendall Johnson’s 156-yard, five-touchdown effort, is coming off a 42-21 triumph over Wilson Central. Overton, on a four-game winning streak, piled up 588 total yards in its 35-13 win over Antioch. McGavock defeated the Bobcats 28-27 in the opening round of last year’s Class 6A playoffs. Overton 32, McGavock 21

BGA coach Roc Batten

BATTLE GROUND ACADEMY (4-0) AT PAGE (4-1)

When: Friday, 7 p.m.

Two of the Midstate’s top quarterbacks will be on display in this Williamson County matchup: Page’s Michael Magochy and Battle Ground Academy’s Clayton Beathard. Magochy, a 6-foot-4, 215-pound senior, has completed close to 60 percent of his passes for 1,093 yards and 10 touchdowns, including last week’s 301-yard, four-touchdown effort against Lawrence County. The 6-foot-1, 182-pound Beathard has been even better, throwing for 1,251 yards and 12 touchdowns, and the reigning Division II-A Mr. Football Back of the Year has eclipsed the 300-yard mark in each of the Wildcats’ four wins. Hillsboro coach Craig Clayton

HILLSBORO (3-2, 2-0 6-5A) AT CANE RIDGE (3-2, 0-2)

When: Friday, 7 p.m.

Hillsboro, ranked ninth in this week’s Tennessean Midstate Top 10, put together its most complete performance of the season a week ago, and, as a result, throttled previously unbeaten Hendersonville by four touchdowns. The Burros offense piled up a season-high 49 points while their defense held a limited Commandos ground game to a season-low 164 yards on 40 carries. Cane Ridge, coming off a 31-28 defeat to Beech, has dropped two of its last three, but Ravens quarterback D.J. Thorpe has thrown for nearly 500 yards and five touchdowns in his last two outings. Hillsboro 27, Cane Ridge 21

Clarksville's Bobby Jackson (left).

HENRY COUNTY (4-1, 2-0 7-5A) AT CLARKSVILLE (5-0, 2-0)

When: Friday, 7 p.m.

Second-year coach Isaac Shelby has Clarksville off to its first 5-0 start this century, but the Wildcats, coming off a 42-35 win over rival Rossview, will face their toughest challenge to date. Henry County, ranked ninth in Class 5A, suffered a 20-3 season-opening loss to Liberty Magnet, but since then, the Patriots have reeled off four consecutive victories, and they’ve outscored their previous three opponents by a combined margin of 120-0. Henry County 28, Clarksville 10

Marshall County Thomas Osteen

STRATFORD (4-1) AT MARSHALL COUNTY (4-1)

When: Friday, 7 p.m.

Stratford suffered its first defeat of the Maurice Fitzgerald era last week, falling 35-20 to visiting White House Heritage, and the Spartans will be looking to avoid a second straight loss on Friday. Marshall County, led by senior quarterback Ashton Posey, has eclipsed the 40-point mark in four of its first five games, including last week’s 46-6 triumph over Giles County. Tigers junior Tre Crutcher hauled in five catches for 145 yards and a pair of touchdowns in the lopsided victory. Marshall County 34, Stratford 27

FRANKLIN ROAD ACADEMY (5-0) AT FRIENDSHIP CHRISTIAN (2-2)

When: Friday, 7:30 p.m.

Franklin Road Academy has faced little resistance en route to the program’s first 5-0 start since 1991. The senior-laden Panthers offense, led by third-year starting quarterback Spence Jones, is averaging more than 40 points, and four of their first five wins have been decided by 20 or more points. Friendship Christian doesn’t possess the same kind of offensive firepower, but the Commanders have limited three of their four opponents to less than three touchdowns. Friendship Christian 21, Franklin Road Academy 20

FATHER RYAN (3-2, 1-1 DII-AA E/M) AT MBA (5-0, 1-0)

When: Friday, 7 p.m.

Father Ryan has come close on several occasions, but the Irish haven’t beaten rival Montgomery Bell Academy since the 1997 state championship game. Since 2009, Father Ryan, which is coming off a disheartening 28-14 road loss to Evangelical Christian, has suffered five single-digit losses to the MBA. The Big Red, ranked atop the Midstate Top 10 for the fourth week in a row, captured a hard-fought 33-27 overtime win at McCallie last week, and running back Ty Chandler delivered yet another monstrous performance, piling up 279 yards and four touchdowns on 39 carries. MBA 42, Father Ryan 21

Nashville Christian School quarterback Kyle Tidwell (10)

NASHVILLE CHRISTIAN (5-0) AT POPE JOHN PAUL II (1-4)

When: Friday, 7 p.m.

Nashville Christian has outscored its first five opponents by a combined 221-39, including last week’s 49-7 win over previously unbeaten Jo Byrns. This week the unbeaten Eagles, ranked second in Class 1A, travel to Pope John Paul II — a homecoming of sorts for Nashville Christian coach Jeff Brothers, who coached the Knights for seven seasons (2003-2009). Pope John Paul II, on a three-game losing streak, kept things competitive a week ago against Ensworth, but ultimately suffered a 52-35 defeat. Nashville Christian 42, Pope John Paul II 34
