SEC Week 6: Viewer's guide, picks

David Ammenheuser
USA TODAY NETWORK – Tennessee
Alabama fans get into the spirit while tailgating before a recent Crimson Tide game.

With four teams on byes this week, there are only six games involving SEC teams.

While the schedule is light, the matchups are intriguing. Four of those are SEC games: Georgia-Tennessee, LSU-South Carolina, Arkansas-Alabama and Florida-Missouri.

Columnist Dave Ammenheuser has posted a 39-12 record picking games involving SEC teams this season.

NEW MEXICO STATE AT OLE MISS

AGGIES (0-4) vs. REBELS (4-1))

Oct. 10, 11 a.m., in Oxford, Miss.

TV: SEC Network

Last week's games: New Mexico State lost to New Mexico 38-29; Ole Miss lost to Florida 38-10

All-time series: First meeting

Opening line: Ole Miss -43

Ammenheuser says: A week after getting thumped in Gainesville, Fla., the Rebels return home to play a very winnable non-conference game. Chad Kelly (26 of 40 for 259 yards) figures to have a much better day than he did against Florida. OLE MISS 49, NEW MEXICO STATE 7

LSU VS. SOUTH CAROLINA

TIGERS (4-0) vs. GAMECOCKS (2-3)

Oct. 10, 2:30 p.m. in Baton Rouge, La.

TV: ESPN

Last week's games: LSU beat Eastern Michigan 44-22; South Carolina lost to Missouri 24-10

All-time series: LSU leads 17-2-1

Opening line: LSU -19

Ammenheuser says: The flooding in South Carolina caused game officials to move the game to Louisiana. Mother Nature has a way of putting football in proper perspective. LSU running back Leonard Fournette continues to be a one-man show, leading the nation in rushing yards (864) and touchdowns (11). Those numbers could take big jumps again Saturday. LSU 38, SOUTH CAROLINA 14

GEORGIA AT TENNESSEE

BULLDOGS (4-1) vs. VOLS (2-3)

Oct. 10, 2:30 p.m. in Knoxville

TV: WTVF-5

Last week's games: Georgia lost to Alabama 38-10; Tennessee lost to Arkansas 24-20

All-time series: Tied 21-21-2

Opening line: Georgia -3

Ammenheuser says: The Vols need some good news. The team has endured a difficult 14-day period, from frustrating losses to Florida and Arkansas to the dismissal of wide receiver Pig Howard. Funny thing about football is all of that could change with a win this week at home against Georgia. That's a tough task. And it likely won't happen because the Bulldogs, too, want to forget last week (and their home loss to Alabama). GEORGIA 31, TENNESSEE 24

TROY AT MISS. STATE

TROJANS (1-3) vs. BULLDOGS (3-2)

Oct. 10, 3 p.m. in Starkville, Miss.

TV: SEC Network

Last week's games: Toy lost to South Alabama 24-18; Miss. State lost to Texas A&M 30-17

All-time series: Miss. State leads 3-1

Opening line: Miss. State -30.5

Ammenheuser says: The Bulldogs bounce back from last week's loss to the Aggies. Dak Prescott (210 yards passing, 96 yards rushing) was the one bright spot in the loss last week. He needs more help from his offensive mates if the Bulldogs are to get back into the SEC race. MISS. STATE 40, TROY 14

ARKANSAS AT ALABAMA

RAZORBACKS (2-3) vs. CRIMSON TIDE (4-1)

Oct. 10, 6 p.m. in Tuscaloosa, Ala.

TV: ESPN

Last week's games: Arkansas beat Tennessee 24-20; Alabama beat Georgia 38-10

All-time series: Alabama leads 15-8

Opening line: Alabama -16.5

Ammenheuser says: With last week's big win in Athens, Ga., the Crimson Tide proved that they are still prime contenders for the SEC title and a trip to the College Football Playoff. Arkansas played better last week against Tennessee, but the Razorbacks won't be much of a match for the Tide in Tuscaloosa. ALABAMA 34, ARKANSAS 20

FLORIDA AT MISSOURI

GATORS (5-0) vs. TIGERS (4-1)

Oct. 10, 6:30 p.m. in Columbia, Mo.

TV: SEC Network

Last week's games: Florida beat Ole Miss 38-10; Missouri beat South Carolina 24-10

All-time series: Missouri leads 3-1

Opening line: Florida -5

Ammenheuser says: These two teams have been more than a bit of a surprise. Who could've figured that Florida would be 5-0? And Missouri is 4-1 despite not getting much out of Maty Mauk (who was suspended and didn't play last week and won't play this week). Freshman Drew Lock (36 of 53 for 361 yards this season) played well for Mauk last week. The winner of this game figures to battle Georgia for the East title and the opportunity to play in the SEC championship game. FLORIDA 28, MISSOURI 14
