How Vanderbilt beat TCU: Inning-by-inning

Vanderbilt remained unbeaten in the College World Series, beating TCU, 1-0, on Tuesday.

The Commodores will play again on Friday against either TCU or LSU. Those two teams meet on Thursday night. The loser will be eliminated. The winner plays Vanderbilt at 7 p.m. Friday.

The Commodores advanced with a come-from-behind 4-3 win over Cal State Fullerton on Monday.

Vanderbilt: Z ander Wiel strikes out; Will Toffey strikes out on failed check swing; Bryan Reynolds strikes out.

TCU: Derek Odell grounds out to shortstop; Keaton Jones strikes out; Nolan Brown flies out to left.

THIRD INNING

BOTH TEAMS THREATEN, BUT DO NOT SCORE

Vanderbilt: Jeren Kendall reaches on a strikeout when TCU catcher allows ball to get past him; Karl Ellison then reaches when lays down a sacrifice bunt, but the pitcher throws wildly to first. That allowed Kendall to get to second base. Tyler Campbell then sacrifices, moving Kendall to third and Ellison to first. Coleman then walks to load the bases. Wiseman strikes out for the second out. With the bases loaded and two outs, Swanson strikes out to end the threat.

TCU: Garrett Crain walks; Jones grounds into fielder's choice to third as Crain is out at second. With Jones on first, Fagnan singles to left to move Jones to second. Wanhanen grounds out to second, moving Jones to third and Fagnan to second. Skoug flies out to right field.

FOURTH INNING

VANDY STILL HITLESS; GAME SCORELESS

Vanderbilt: TCU pitcher Alex Young strikes out Wiel and Toffey, then Reynolds flies out to first baseman in foul territory. Young has nine strikeouts in four innings and has not allowed a hit.

TCU: Steinhagen struck out, Odell pops out to center field; Jones flies out to left.

FIFTH INNING

Vanderbilt: Kendall strikes out; Ellison strikes out; Campbell flies out to right field.

TCU: Brown strikes out; Crain flies out to center; Jones walks on a full count; Fagnan flies out to left.

Vanderbilt: Coleman strikes out (No. 12 for Young), Wiseman's bunt attempt doesn't work as Young throws him out; Swanson Swanson flies out to right.

TCU: Wanhanen reaches on a bunt single; Skoug flies out to center; With Steinhagen batting, Pfeifer balks to allow Wanhanen to move to second base. Steinhagen strikes out after being ahead 3-balls, 0-strikes; Odell grounds out to shortstop to end the inning.

Toffey grounds out; Reynolds singles to center; Kendall's sacrifice bunt moves Reynolds to second base. Ellison grounds out to end inning.

TCU: Jones hits a grounder to short. Swanson picks the ball up and throws wildly past first, allowing Jones to get to second base (ruling hit and an error); Brown flies out to center; Crain strikes out (Pfeifer's 7th of the game); Jones grounds out to second to end the inning.

EIGHTH INNING

VANDY HOLDS 1-0 EDGE

Vanderbilt: Campbell pops out to short; Coleman grounds out to third; Wiseman doubles down the right-field line; At that point, TCU pitcher Alex Young is removed from the game. Reliever Trey Teakell comes in to face Swanson. He strikes out Swanson.

TCU: Kyle Wright replaces Pfeifer on the mound. Wright strikes out Fagnan and Wanhanen. Skoug then walks on four pitches. Evan Williams, pinch-hitting for Steinhagen, singles to left. With Skoug on second and Williams on first, Odell grounds out to pitcher.
