A couple with connections to Middle Tennessee is missing in Brussels after a deadly terrorist attack there, according to multiple news and social media reports.

Family members of Justin Shults and his wife, Stephanie Shults, are reporting that the couple was at the airport on Tuesday before explosions broke out.

Vanderbilt grad in Brussels confirmed dead, wife still missing

No one has heard from them since.

Jim Gray, the mayor of Lexington, Ky., called the couple victims of the attack on his Twitter account Tuesday evening. Stephanie Shults is from Lexington.

"We join those praying for victims of this tragedy, including Lexington’s Stephanie Shultz (sic) & her husband, Justin, both missing in Belgium," Gray said.

Several U.S. citizens were injured in the terrorist attacks, according to John Kirby, spokesman for the Department of State. But Kirby said he was not aware of any U.S. citizens who had died.

"The situation is still fluid, but we are working with local authorities to locate and assist any U.S. citizens affected by the attacks," Kirby said in a statement. "When we have more information about the scope of how this tragedy has affected U.S. citizens, we will share it."

The State Department would not confirm if the Shultses were among the U.S. citizens who had been injured.

Justin Shults' brother took to Twitter Tuesday to post updates about his family's attempts to reach the couple. And a relative of Stephanie Shults told a CBS affiliate in Kentucky that her mother had been visiting the couple and was due to be at the airport on Tuesday.

On his LinkedIn page, Shults was listed as a Vanderbilt University graduate who worked in Brussels for Clarcor, a Franklin-based manufacturing company.

Shults' profile said he had moved to Brussels in 2014 but had previously worked for Clarcor in the Nashville area.

As of mid-Wednesday morning, Justin Shults' brother tweeted that his family still had no word about the couple's whereabouts.
