Blue Devils settle for runner-up

WHITE HOUSE The White House High School boys soccer team played to a pair of ties on Saturday afternoon, resulting in a runner-up finish in the White House Round-Robin Tournament.

The Blue Devils opened play with a 1-1 tie with Rossview on Friday evening.

Rossview won the tournament with 16 points, and White House finished with 14 points, one point better than third-place Giles County.

“If we correct our immature mistakes and mature a bit, we’re going to be pretty good by the end of the season,” Blue Devil head coach Mark Lamberth said. “If we don’t learn from it, it’s going to be a very short season.

“Giles County is a team we could see (in the postseason). La Vergne is always exceptionally athletic, and we really need to see that. Rossview is Rossview. Coach (Danny) Chartrand does a great job and gets the most out of his players. We’re seeing well-coached teams with tradition that play with class. It’s an even tournament every year.”

White House played to a 3-3 tie with La Vergne on Saturday afternoon.

The Blue Devils (2-2-3) led 3-1 but finished the match with just nine players due to a pair of red cards, one of which was assessed to senior goalkeeper Logan Trimmer.

Junior goalkeeper Jeremy Potts stepped in.

“He did an admirable job in that game and in the second game with Giles (County),” Lamberth said.

White House junior Brady Briley played a through-ball to senior Mark Lees for the game’s first goal at the 27:00 mark, and Lees played a through-ball to sophomore Hunter Hutton for the second conversion a minute later.

The Wolverines pulled to within a goal with a conversion three minutes later, but Hutton’s through-ball resulted in Lees’ second goal six minutes into the second half.

La Vergne scored with approximately 15 minutes remaining, and then, a foul in the box resulted in the game-tying penalty kick with two minutes to play.

The Blue Devils played to a 1-1 tie with Giles County later on Saturday afternoon.

The Bobcats scored on a direct free kick with three minutes left in the first half, but Briley played a through-ball to Lees for the tying goal with three minutes left.

Potts finished with eight saves.
