Bonnaroo 2016 lineup: Pearl Jam, Dead & Company, more

As it prepares to celebrate its 15th anniversary, Bonnaroo is inviting some familiar faces back to “the farm.”

Pearl Jam, Dead & Company and LCD Soundsystem lead the lineup for this year’s massive music festival, taking place June 9-12 in Manchester, Tenn.

It won’t be any of the performers’ first time at Bonnaroo. Pearl Jam and LCD Soundsystem last played the festival in 2008 and 2010, respectively, while much of Dead & Company — a new group composed of members of The Grateful Dead and John Mayer — has appeared there in various acts.

Dead & Company’s inclusion also is a nod to the festival’s “jam-band” roots. Bonnaroo’s earliest bills were dominated by rockers inspired by the freewheeling, improvisational style of The Grateful Dead.

“The Dead were a big influence on the festival, and the community,” said Jonathan Mayers of Bonnaroo co-producers Superfly Presents. “It's amazing to have them at our 15-year anniversary.”

Further down the bill, the sounds of this year’s festival branch out considerably. There’s hip-hop (J. Cole, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis) pop (Ellie Goulding, Haim, Halsey), electronic rock (Tame Impala, M83, Chvrches) and a healthy dose of country and roots music.

That last category includes several Nashville-based notables: Jason Isbell, Chris Stapleton, Sam Hunt, Rayland Baxter, Sam Bush Band and Anderson East. Local indie-rockers Bully, Civil Twilight and Judah & the Lion also can be found on the undercard.

What ties this diverse group of acts together to the Bonnaroo bookers — they connect with audiences, even ones who’ve never heard them before.

“It doesn't really matter the genre; it's based on the strength of the live show,” Mayers said.

Lineup additions will continue to be announced in the coming months, including for the festival’s comedy tent and “Cafe Stage” performers. Details on the festival’s signature “super-jam” — which features multiple performers and special guests teaming up for one night only — also will be revealed at a later date.

General admission tickets for this year’s Bonnaroo are $324.50 to $349.50. VIP tickets are $1,598.50 per pair. Tickets go on sale at 11 a.m. Central time Friday at www.bonnaroo.com.
