Ryder Supply Chain Solutions plans to create 606 new jobs in Maury County through an expansion of its warehousing, transportation, kitting and assembly operations.

The Miami-based commercial fleet management and supply chain company will invest $16.5 million on equipment, information technology and infrastructure and double to 600,000 square feet the space its warehousing operations occupy on General Motors' Spring Hill campus.

Ryder employs 200 people at the logistics operation that supports client manufacturers such as General Motors. Employment would increase to more than 800 over the next five years from the jobs to be added.

"It's just another indicator that the automotive manufacturing industry is roaring back," said Jan McKeel, executive director of the South Central Tennessee Workforce Alliance, a workforce development organization for eight southern Middle Tennessee counties.

Steve Sensing

Steve Sensing, president of Ryder System Inc.'s global supply chain solutions, said the company is expanding its Spring Hill logistics operation in support of its growing business in that market where it has had a presence for at least 20 years.

"We've served customers in Spring Hill for decades," he said. "The area is flush with talent enabling us to meet our customers' logistics needs."

The new jobs Ryder is adding in Spring Hill include mobile equipment operators, kitting and sequencing operators and shuttle drivers.

Ryder Supply Chain Solutions will invest $16.5 million to expand its operations in Spring Hill, as well as add 606 jobs over five years.

Will Evans, president of the Maury County Chamber & Economic Alliance, called Ryder's expansion plans the largest single announcement in terms of number of new employees among a streak of job additions or expansions in the past year.

Others include 180 new jobs planned at an $80 million porcelain tile manufacturing facility in Mt. Pleasant for Gruppo Concorde's UST Inc. subsidiary.

In a prepared statement, Gov. Bill Haslam said Tennessee's central location and logistics infrastructure offers companies a great setting for growth and success.

“Our goal to make Tennessee the No. 1 location in the Southeast for high quality jobs is made possible with the support of companies like Ryder," he said.
