More passengers than ever traveled through Nashville International Airport during the past year.

The authority that manages the airport announced on Monday that during the past 12 months, the travel hub broke its one-year record by handling 10.6 million passengers.

"This is a significant achievement for Nashville International Airport, Nashville and the Middle Tennessee region," Rob Wigington, the airport's president and CEO, said in a news release. "This milestone passenger number reflects Nashville's flourishing economy and highlights the rise of travelers and visitors who are choosing to fly into and out of Music City."

Passenger traffic during the airport authority's 2014 fiscal year, which ended in June, was up 6 percent over the previous fiscal year, when 10.1 million passengers traveled through the airport.

It's the third time in its history that the airport has had more than 10 million passengers. The first came in 1993, when it served as a hub for American Airlines.

Last month, the airport also broke another record: the most passengers in one day. After the four-day CMA Music Festival, more than 20,000 passengers flew through the airport.
