RESTORE FAITH

Confidence in the new coaching staff was tested through a hectic seven-game stretch that included 10 in-game quarterback changes, suspensions of running backs Brian Kimbrow and Jerron Seymour, wide receiver Jordan Cunningham's leave of absence, a few costly injuries and five double-digit losses. Time away from games could allow coach Derek Mason to re-sell his vision to the team.

HEAL ROBINETTE

Quarterback Patton Robinette has played only portions of three games because of injuries, most recently a concussion that sidelined him for the past three games. The Commodores have outscored opponents 55-24 with Robinette in the lineup, but they have been outscored 214-68 with Wade Freebeck, Stephen Rivers and Johnny McCrary at quarterback. Robinette's return might stabilize the offense.

SIMPLIFY SPECIAL TEAMS

Special teams have made some errors in elementary plays such as fielding a squib kick, shield-blocking on a punt and catching a rugby punt. There also have been some standout plays on special teams, but the mistakes have canceled them out. Situational special teams should be a focus during the bye week.

GET CREATIVE

The goal of the past few games was to incorporate all-purpose performers Darrius Sims and Trent Sherfield into the offense, but both have had limited roles. Sims has two receptions and one carry, and Sherfield has one rushing attempt. When games have gotten away, Vanderbilt has scrapped its Sims/Sherfield plan. It needs a new plan next week.

LEAN ON LINES

A team is only as good as its offensive and defensive lines, but neither has measured up yet. The offensive line was supposed to be a strength, but it has underachieved. And defensively, the Commodores have allowed an average of 209.3 rushing yards over the past four games. It starts in the middle, where center Joe Townsend and nose tackle Vince Taylor must lead their groups.
