Record Store Day spins into Nashville

Crowds fill the sidewalks at Third Man Records in Nashville on Record Store Day.

It's the biggest day of the year for independently owned record stores — and few places know how to celebrate quite like Music City.

The annual Record Store Day sets up shop Saturday, and Nashville retailers will be marking the occasion with outdoor parties, in-store concerts and limited-edition music releases. Still need to make a game plan? Here's a quick rundown of the local happenings:

Grimey’s New & Preloved Music will have a free concert Saturday as part of Record Store Day festivities.

Grimey's New & Preloved Music

Only beloved record haven Grimey's could unite the likes of newly minted Rock and Roll Hall of Famer John Oates, major label spiritual rockers NEEDTOBREATHE and indie favorites The Secret Sisters and The Apache Relay. All of those acts — and more — will perform for free in the store's back lot, with food vendors including Jeni's Spendid Ice Cream, Frothy Monkey and Olive & Sinclair. (10 a.m.-8 p.m., 1604 Eighth Ave. S., 615-254-4801)

Third Man Records

World-renowned Nashville rock musician Jack White isn't just selling records at the Nashville storefront of his label, Third Man Records — he's aiming to set one, too, by creating "The World's Fastest Released Record."

The plan is to record a live version of his new single in Third Man's "Blue Room" at 10 a.m., then deliver it down the road to the Nashville-based United Record Pressing, which immediately will press copies and deliver them to Third Man to be sold to fans in a matter of hours.

Third Man's Record Store Day celebration also will feature the first performance in nearly a decade by Detroit's Whirlwind Heat, breakfast on the store's back patio, complementary slices of "Third Man Coney Dog Pizza" from Two Boots and more. White and Whirlwind Heat performances are for Third Man "Vault" members only and require the purchase of an "Ultra Ticket" at www.thirdmanrecords.com (7 a.m.-6 p.m., 623 Seventh Ave. S., 615-891-4393)

The Groove

Matthew Stager of Madison looks through vinyl records at The Groove.

East Nashville vinyl outpost The Groove is packing a colorful cast of local talents into its backyard on Calvin Avenue — including alt-country songsmith Nikki Lane and classic indie-rockers Bully — as well as edibile offerings from neighbors Mas Tacos, Porter Road Butcher and The Filling Station. (10 a.m. to 8 p.m., 1103 Calvin Ave., 615-227-5760)

Fond Object

New East Side addition Fond Object Records is celebrating its first anniversary and Record Store Day with a single, super-sized party in Riverside Village.

PUJOL, Fly Golden Eagle and Turbo Fruits (who will cover the songs of punk greats The Misfits) are among the local indie rock staples who'll play in their backyard, and we're pretty sure this is the only Record Store Day party in Nashville — or the rest of the world — with a petting zoo as one of its attractions. Food and drink offerings will come from Super Dogs, Tacos Andreas and more. (10 a.m.-10 p.m., 1313 McGavock Pike, 615-499-4498).
